Calculating the dynamic load capacity
The dynamic load capacity plays an important role for transport equipment. It represents the maximum permissible load that a caster or wheel can withstand when repeatedly in motion over a long period of time. A distinction must be made between dynamic and static load capacity. The latter describes the permissible load when the transport equipment is stationary.
The dynamic load capacity C per caster is calculated using the following formula:
C = (P + L) / (n-1)
P = Tare weight - weight of the unloaded transport device
L = additional load
n = number of casters or wheels
In this calculation, the number of casters or wheels is reduced by one. This is because transport equipment is rarely used on perfectly even floors. Often, the load is not distributed over all 4 casters or wheels at the same time. This load capacity calculation addresses these instances.
Important factors for the dynamic load capacity
The calculation is based on standard conditions, i.e. moving straight ahead on level floors at walking speed with uniform load distribution and a moderate ambient temperature (15°C to 28°C). If the actual conditions deviate from these, the load capacity will change. The actual conditions must therefore be taken into account from the start. For heavy-duty castors that can carry particularly heavy loads, it is also important to add a safety factor to the formula: the greater the load, the greater the safety factor.
